In 2013/14 more than one in every four of all Oldham’s households received annual average tax credits of £7,508 meaning in real terms they paid no tax.

Finalised figures released in May show that in 2013/14 more than one in every four Oldham households received an annual average £7,508 in tax credits. This not only means that in real terms these households do not pay any tax but in actuality Oldham recipients of both working & child tax credits get an annual payment equal to two years income tax & National Insurance contributions for a worker on £25,000 per annum. Oldham average payments remained the highest in Greater Manchester with in-work claimants receiving working and child tax credits averaging £9,813 and out-of-work claimants receiving an average £6,502.
