It is traditional when a Member of Parliament dies that all political parties refrain from electioneering before the funeral of the deceased MP. With only a month to go before the by-election and Mr Meacher’s funeral not taking place until November 13th, Labour’s Debbie Abrahams has honoured this tradition by handing out leaflets to the public informing them about Michael Meacher’s political service in Oldham. This is little more than distasteful backdoor electioneering by an MP synonymous with cherry picked pet projects which coincidently have the potential to gather the most local support in Oldham. It is hard to respect an MP that criticizes the lack of austerity placed upon pensioners but who consistently quotes UK benefit statistics that have absolutely no correlation with the figures for Oldham.
