Oldham’s former Butterfly’s nightclub on King St is set to make way for a 126 apartment residential & retail development if a property developer can be found after the site was aquired by Millerbrook Properties Limited and planning consent obtained for the mixed use development. This development is at the opposite end of Union Street to where Oldham Council is planning to expand private housing at Prince’s Gate. Metrolink locality cannot offset the problems inherent in Oldham Town Centre which is constrained by poverty on all sides making sale prices extremely low for any new developments not for the rental market. Oldham Council’s Prince’s Gate report states that they may need to develop the housing element in-house as sales prices will be so low private developers will not take the risk with such small profit margins. There is a real risk that any of these low sales priced Town Centre residential developments will be snapped up by landlords in the private rental market.
