There has been yet another contract extension at the never ending saga of the old town hall Egyptian rooms originally renovated costing millions over 7 years ago and empty ever since unable to secure a tenant. When the Egyptian rooms does eventually open as a food hall the scheme will have cost at least £45 million some £35 million more than its original £10 million budget. Let’s predict now that not a single local news outlet will question the scandalous cost or the councils failure to secure tenants, create the jobs promised or the annual economic boost predicted to GVA 11 years ago. At a time when every second Labour council post is about child poverty, food poverty and food banks why is the council turning the entire town centre into a takeaway?
